Florida International University is a public university located in Miami. It was founded in 1965 and is one of the 15 largest universities in the United States in terms of area. The university consists of two main campuses in Miami-Dade County, and the main campus is in University Park. The university is classified as a research university by the Florida Legislature.
The university is located directly on the bay and adjacent to the River State Park, which inspired the university administration to create a marine biology program that has become one of the university's most popular programs.
