About University
Stony Brook University, officially known as the University of New York Stony Brook, is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and is located on Long Island. This university was founded in 1957 as a college to prepare high school mathematics and science teachers. The university began in Oyster Bay on Long Island, on the grounds of a former Gilded Age estate, and was moved to a new site near the historic village of Stony Brook in 1962. The university is located on 1,039 acres in the northern part of Long Island. It is about 60 miles east of Manhattan and 60 miles west of Montauk Point, which places it near the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and the vineyards of the eastern part of the island, and nearby there are many tourist attractions such as the Hessler American Art Museum, the Vanderbilt Historic Site, and Port Jeffers.
