The University of Central Florida is an American public research university in Orlando, Florida, founded in 1963. It is the largest university in the United States by enrollment. Its headquarters is in Orlando and it operates through 11 university centers spread throughout the state. The university was nicknamed the Space Grant University due to the significant research contributions it has made and is making to engineering, optics, simulation, and digital media. The university has a unique campus layout that has become a model for other universities, which is reminiscent of the plans of the Walt Disney Company, as it was designed to be a pedestrianized campus, with a series of overlapping circles. The outer circle is the main road for vehicular traffic within the campus. This campus is one of only two in the United States with a united circle design
